Culture & museums - a proud people

You might think that the language spoken on Bornholm is out of the ordinary, but when you get to Bornholm you will soon see that this is not the only thing.

On Bornholm you encounter a special pride in the island, which even newcomers soon develop.

There are many reasons for this, of course, reasons that you can delve into on your visit to Bornholm.

Natives of Bornholm

The people of Bornholm were free while others were serfs. As islanders, the people of Bornholm have travelled far and wide in pursuit of trade and fishing. All sorts of failures have made the people of Bornholm look askance at outside authorities, and on Bornholm we don't always like "those people who sit over there and make all the decisions".

Still, the people of Bornholm are in many ways more Danish than the rest of the Danish population. Their solidarity at any rate is enormous.

This probably has something to do with the wars around 1658, when Bornholm decided to free itself from its Swedish conquerors and presented itself to the Danish king. And it became even clearer after the Russian bombardment and during the Cold War, when the enemy was very close.

But look for the soul of the people when visiting the island. Talk to the people you meet, or visit some of the many museums, exhibitions and monuments that give insight into the unique history and evolution of the island.
